Last summer, ReBUILD’s Deconstruction Crew traveled to Stowe, Vermont, to work on a 912-square-foot home with a 352-square-foot attached garage. The house, in the heart of Stowe, was a typical single story 1950s structure consisting of a full kitchen, three bedrooms, one bath and a poured concrete and cinder block foundation. ReBUILD’s deconstruction crew set to work on removing the interior finishes, cabinets, doors, and electric and mechanical materials.
The second week brought help in the form of students from Yestermorrow School in Warren, Vermont, who pitched in and worked to deconstruct the buildings. The decon crew showed the students how to carefully dismantle items to preserve their value while discussing the importance of keeping construction materials out of the landfill. The entire project took eleven days and not only salvaged some great materials to be reused, but created a team intent on doing the best job they could.
Among the items processed and brought back to ReBUILD’s Building Material Store were: maple hardwood flooring, wood trim, lumber, interior doors, bricks, 50-gallon water heater, washing machine, and 275-gallon oil tank.
