In 2001, ReSOURCE identified a problem and an opportunity when we learned that more than 30 percent of the material in our landfills is construction debris: wood, sheetrock, cabinets. As these materials degrade, they release gases, CO2 being one of the more prevalent gases. We launched ReBUILD to address both the environmental and practical aspects of building material salvage and supply.
ReBUILD’s Deconstruction Service carefully and safely salvages building materials, thereby marketing reused goods, creating jobs, and implementing sound environmental practices through its Building Material Retail Store.
We have recently tooled-up our woodworking shop, and with the help of YouthBuild students and other trainees, are producing the Waste-Not-Products line of birdhouses, tables, benches, cutting boards all made from salvaged materials. For more information on WNP, email: WNP@Resourcevt.org

ReBUILD Services:
Deconstruction
An average home (approximately 2,000 square feet), if demolished, can produce about 10,000 cubic feet of landfill debris. With ReBUILD’s Deconstruction Service, we are able to recover, and thus divert, approximately 60 to 80 percent of building waste from being dumped into our landfills. Last year, we estimate that ReBUILD helps prevent 56,000 lineal feet of lumber, 90 cabinets, 5,000 bricks, and 156 doors from being disposed of in landfills. And the types of materials being recycled are state-of-the-art: tile, hardwood flooring, windows, plywood, plumbing fixtures, and more.
In addition, we usually find that deconstruction is a less expensive way to demolish and remove a structure when landfill tipping fees are factored in. All we need is a little more time than the typical demolition crew to dismantle a building. Usually, we can salvage the materials to be recycled within a 7 to 10 day period.
ReBUILD Deconstruction is also available to do a “soft-strip” project. The crew will come in and carefully dismantle kitchens, bathrooms, and other pieces of a building so that these materials can be reused.
We also utilize materials which have outlived their original purpose. ReBUILD’s Waste-Not-Products are creative household items made from salvaged materials. Training YouthBuild students and other trainees, we have created: birdhouses, picture frames, and mirrors made from unserviceable windows, flooring or lumber.
